The FES offers a wide variety of programs, which aim to inform, qualify, and engage participants. In these programs the FES promotes and enables citizens to make sound and educated political decisions thereby strengthening Social Democracy.
Through its regional discussion forums, workshops, and public dialogues between politicians and civil society, the FES allows citizens to participate more actively and effectively in democratic processes., contributing t the design of social change.
Its network of education offices and academic throughout Germany, special projects, and conference centers in Bonn and Berlin, offer diverse and wide-ranging programs which are also made available online.
THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM OF THE FRIEDRICH-EBERT-STIFTUNG
Equal access to education is one of the central goals of the FES. Since it was established, the Stiftung has provided scholarships, which today support 2700 undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students, both German and foreign, per year. The scholarship program targets gifted young people whose civic engagements embody the shared values of Social Democracy. The program pays special attention to talented students from immigrant backgrounds, students from low-income households, and students who represent the first generation in their family to attend college. Scholarship recipients benefit from financial support, the worldwide FES network, and through access to seminars, workshops, and mentoring.
ARCHIVE AND LIBRARY
The Archive of Social Democracy and the library preserve the printed and unprinted memory of Social Democracy, the trade unions, and their key figures. The library is one of the largest academic specialty libraries in the world, with its collection of historic and contemporary documentation of the German and international labor and social movements. Many publications of the FES are available via the digital library. The archive cares for one of the largest collections of unpublished material on Social Democracy and trade unions in Germany and Europe, mainly after 1945. The material is researchable through the digital archive.
Through its events and publications, the archive fosters political discourse to raise awareness on both the historic and contemporary significance of Social Democracy and the trade union movement.
A functioning democracy requires the support of an enlightened public sphere, and sustainable political concepts. Through analysis of key issues and challenges, the FES contributes to a sound foundation for public discussion in Germany and throughout the world. The FES also provides policy advice to politicians and trade unions as they work to find viable policy solutions. In so doing the ideals and the values of Social Democracy – freedom, justice and solidarity – remain our primary concern.
Through discussions with experts, workshops and conferences at the regional, national, continental and global level, the FES brings together key figures from politics, trade unions, academia, business, and civil society in order to promote in depth discussion on today’s political issues. The policy consulting or the FES – at the interface between academia and political practice – enables political actors to make informed and competent decisions.
WITHOUT DEMOCRACY THERE CAN BE NO FREEDOM… TO PROTECT DEMOCRACY, TO RESTORE IT WHERE IT IS UNDER ATTACK, THIS IS THE DUTY OF ALL THOSE WHO LOVE FREEDOM.
The analysis of FES experts and scholars, as well as those commissioned by the FES, are in high demand; these analyses are published in a number of series. They form part of the activities to enhance understanding of the global policy agenda and support public debate on future policy directions.
These publications are available online and are discussed at events.
