The Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Skopje office, in cooperation with the Gender Equality Platform organized a Forum "Economic empowerment as a tool for promoting gender equality in Macedonia." Promoting the economic empowerment of women is recognized as a key factor that enhances gender equality and therefore it is important to exchange different experiences, and to establish the opportunities for the civil society to ensure the promotion of gender equality.
Civil society organizations have an opportunity to present burning issues affecting gender equality, as well as different approaches to improve the economic empowerment of women. We hope that the event offered a fruitful discussion among stakeholders and served as a forum for discussing priorities for economic empowerment of women.
The event of the Gender Equality Platform promoted its economic program - Strengthening the economic position of women in the country. The low employment of women in Macedonia is a topic discussed more among citizens than within the public debate and public policy. Unfortunately, when public policies treat the question of the status of women in the labor market, it is done in a partial manner. Namely, low activity of women is commonly explained only by traditional norms that define gender roles in society. A small number of surveys and studies of public policy in the country dedicated to the detection and identification of key factors that contribute to the maintenance (or worsening) of the status quo situation of women in the overall socio-economic relations in society. This document seeks to fill in the gap, and offer a clear picture of the key factors that adversely affect gender equality and economic status of women. The document has been forwarded to all relevant state and civil institutions. See the document here.
