On 11.12.2015 a debate on "Women and Politics: The involvement and influence of women in politics in Macedonia", was organized by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the Platform for Gender Equality.
The debate took place one day after SDSM approved the decision to increase the quota for female representation to 40%, an amendment which is expected to be approved also for the Electoral Code.
The debate emphasized the low level of participation of women in the highest policy-making positions, starting from the fact that currently out of 20 ministers only 2 are women, representing only 10% of the government functions. Moreover, out of 85 mayors only 4 are women, indicating that unless there is a legal quota the representation of women in decision-making positions stays negligible.
As a conclusion, to solutions were offered to the problem of women with double burden of responsibilities – the first is for the state to systematically offer services and models that will help women to balance professional and domestic responsibilities, but also for the political parties to raise the awareness and create conditions that will help women in addition to domestic responsibilities to be to able participate in political processes.
